LETTER FROM CARLTON

I write this letter with the highest level of enthusiasm and excitement for this new avenue of communication. While each of you spend your time hyper-focused on achieving the specific goals of your individual companies, I have the great honor of witnessing all of the fantastic progress that each of you and your teams continue to make.

The intention of this quarterly publication is so that you too can be made aware of all the amazing happenings in our enterprise. From time to time we will call upon some of you to contribute more significantly to dive a bit deeper into particular aspects of your companies that we can all learn from. As this is a work in progress, we would love feedback as to how we can make this publication better for all of you.

We have built an organization comprised of so many talented and intelligent team members and I feel that each of us has so much to learn from one another. Each of you brings to the table such different life and work experiences and I say it often and I will say it again, I feel blessed and honored to be on this amazing journey with each of you.

With Gratitude,

CARLTON MCCOY JR, MS

 Burgess

Banner_04_dark-scaled.jpg

Burgess was established in 1972 by Tom Burgess, a retired Air Force pilot with a particular enthusiasm for Cabernet Sauvignon. However, the story of Burgess is the culmination of over 150 years of Napa Valley History.

Swiss-Italian immigrants from the canton of Ticino were the first to plant vines on the hillsides of Howell Mountain in 1870. The Ponchetta & Rossini families cultivated vines in the traditional way of their homeland, on sheer hillsides with extreme elevations. It was the very same pioneering outlook that inspired Lee Stewart of Souverain Cellars to plant Cabernet Sauvignon on

the precipitous slopes of Howell Mountain. Napa Valley greats such as Warren Winiarski of Stag’s Leap Cellars and Mike Grgich of the eponymous Grgich Hills winery cut their teeth at the Estate we now know as Burgess, before starting their own historic wineries.

By 1972, Tom Burgess acquired the estate from Lee Stewart and began cultivating and vinifying mountainside Cabernet Sauvignon with Bill Sorenson as his chief

winemaker. Bill went on to hold one of the longest-tenured winemaking careers in the Valley with an impressive 41 consecutive harvests. Upon Tom and Bill’s retirement, Tom’s son Steve Burgess undertook the operations with winemaker Kelly Woods.

In 2020 Steve Burgess passed the mantle to Gaylon Lawrence, upholding a 150-year tradition of family ownership. Gaylon entrusted this tremendous legacy to Estate Director, Garrett Hales and Winemaker, Meghan Zobeck. Meghan and Garrett strive to champion the history of the Napa Valley by preserving historic vineyards with regenerative farming practices that will ensure the health of these vines for generations to come.

As of June 2021, Burgess has relocated to their new home at the historic St. Andrew’s Vineyard in the Oak Knoll District. This will be the destination of the education center for Meghan’s regenerative farming efforts, providing guests with an immersive learning experience.

WINE OF THE MONTH

BURGESS CELLARS
2015 ALPINIST,
RED BLEND, NAPA VALLEY

Inspired by the “1855 Classification” era of Bordeaux, Alpinist is a juxtaposition of rugged and polished, characterized by the tension of Syrah’s animal nature and Cabernet’s refinement. In the 1850’s big Bordeaux chateaux would buy finished barrels of Syrah form the hill of hermitage and blend it into the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends of the Medoc. The Syrah would intensify the color concentration, bolster alcohol, and add aromatic complexity to the Medoc blends. This technique, no illegal under the Appelation d’Origine Controlle scheme, would result in a much more premium wine with a higher price tag, resulting in elevated classifications for the Chateaux that utilized this technique. The name Alpinist is derived from the Swiss Italian immigrants who settled and developed our Estate Sorenson Vineyard, their heritage being that of Ticino, one of the many Alpine Cantons of Switzerland. Aromas of dried figs and mulberry play a complementary role to black olives and smoked meat, with a lingering black peppercorn finish.

 Heitz Cellar

We are excited to be only a few weeks away from opening the Salon at Heitz Cellar, located at the original site of the first winery Joe Heitz purchased in 1961. This long- awaited debut will be the new home for our beloved guests, members, family, and industry partners. It will showcase the future of hospitality for Heitz Cellar and the Napa Valley. We are also very proud to be sending out our 2021 Holiday Catalog, which has a collection of curated offers and pays homage to the last six decades of Heitz Cellar and the incredible people and events that have made the estate so revered. All of this does not happen without everyone’s collective hard work and dedication, and whether you work directly for Heitz Cellar or not, we appreciate all that you do for us.

 STONY HILL

The past few months at Stony Hill have been a time of great growth. The team welcomes Chris Ryan as Hospitality and Education Manager and Richard Norman as our newest Wine Educator. Our small and mighty family is about to get just a little bit bigger even with Julia Minnillo, our Member and Guest Relations Manager, set to have her baby boy in February!

We look forward to breaking ground with a landscape and interior design update in the new year and all the opportunities that will come with it. It’s our passion to continue the legacy of those before us when it comes to this design, but the ability to also put our mark on such a storied site is quite the honor.

All of this goes to say that the team up here on the hill has worked diligently in ways that exceed any expectations. It’s a pleasure to share just a small part of it with you all.
-Michaela Kelly, Estate Director

This late fall season is a time of rest for our winemaking team. While there is always work to be done in the cellar, Jaimee and I once again look forward. Conversations about farming and future winemaking goals have us feeling inspired and hopeful. We are excited to make preliminary blends in our concrete vessels and oak casks. Over the next few weeks, we will transfer several lots to these larger formats for élevage.

We are back to regularly walking our blocks and checking in on the health and progress of our vines both young and old. After these recent rains, cover crop has begun to fill in and our Stony Hill soil is covered with a variety of young clovers, grasses, and other beneficial species. It is a relief to feel the moisture in the air and see fresh growth blanketing the soil.
